Blackpool LIFE campaign – Rise to the Challenge

Description A branding that will be easily recognised and associated with health messages by agencies and the public.
Setting Blackpool
Population Population within the areas of highest deprivation across Blackpool.
Intervention All relevant publications are branded with LIFE campaign and logo. The logo is regularly used on promotional messages and other media tools and also for healthy vending machines in public buildings and schools.
Main Outcome Take-up in services and health promoting activities such as stopping smoking or an increase in participation in physical activity.

Dundee Smoking and Pregnancy Project

Description The project encouraged and supported pregnant women in Dundee not to smoke and to remain smoke free following the birth of their child.
Setting Hospital and community antenatal clinics and patients’ own homes
Population All pregnant women attending their first or "booking in" antenatal clinic visit who were smokers between June 2004 and July 2005, or who had stopped smoking during the previous year.
Intervention Improving smoking cessation support skills among health professionals, and providing one to one smoking cessation support for pregnant women
Main Outcome Approximately one third of participants reported they had reduced the number of cigarettes smoked

Healthy Living Resource Centre

Description The Centre will open in October 2007. It will bring about step changes in local health inequalities by tackling particular health issues like smoking, obesity, poor housing, mental health and community regeneration by changing how services are delivered locally, reducing barriers and improving health choices.
Setting Easington Colliery and its surrounding areas. Easington Colliery is the most deprived area in England as defined by the English Indices of Deprivation (2004).
Population All residents living in Easington Colliery and its surrounding areas.
Intervention A number of core services will be delivered through the centre such as podiatry service, cardiovascular suite and a children’s gym. Sessional activities will include smoking cessation, weight management, healthy eating and community safety.
Main Outcome None yet. A number of outcomes will be measured such as life expectancy, smoking cessation rates and obesity levels.

Heart of Mersey (HoM) CVD prevention programme

Description England's largest and most comprehensive cardiovascular disease (CVD) primary prevention programme.
Setting Various settings throughout the six Local Authorities (LAs) of Greater Merseyside: Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens and Wirral.
Population The whole population of Greater Merseyside, especially children and adults living in the most deprived areas of Greater Merseyside.
Intervention Various healthy food and tobacco control interventions make up the programme. Examples include: Food and Health Strategy, Merseyside Food Charter, Smokefree NHS and LAs, Health Survey for Greater Merseyside and Healthy Stadia.
Main Outcome Reduction in dietary fat intake and population level of serum total cholesterol; increase in fruit and vegetable consumption; reduced salt and sugar intake; and more people stopping smoking.

Nurse-Led Clinics in Cardiology

Description Nurse-led clinics for heart attack and invasive investigations including surgery.
Setting Secondary care
Population Patients who have had a heart attack, angiogram, angioplasty or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).
Intervention The clinics ensure patients are seen by a specialist nurse with the knowledge and skills to assist the patient in making empowered decisions about their recovery and future.
Main Outcome Not available

Starting Fresh with the Glasgow Pharmacy Smoking Cessation Project

Description Trained pharmacists offer support to smokers and supply Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
Setting Community pharmacies in Greater Glasgow
Population Adult smokers
Intervention The project trains pharmacists and assistants to assess peoples’ motivation to stop smoking and, if motivated, supplies NRT products together with brief support
Main Outcome Over 45 000 have accessed the service

Description Encourage staff to adopt healthier lifestyles and gather the evidence to demonstrate that workplace health promotion works.

Intervention A wide range of interventions including onsite activity clubs, team pedometer challenges and health MOTs.

Winning with Wellness

Description A two year workplace health promotion project
Setting Workplace
Population Adults aged 16-64 years employed at Masterfoods UK in Slough
Intervention Various interventions are being delivered including a smoking cessation service, an in-house weight management scheme, onsite exercise classes and wellbeing workshops.
Main Outcome The project is being evaluated by Loughborough University and will report in late 2007/early 2008.
Cost Start-up - Approximately £100 000 Each regional project was given a grant of £100 000 for a period of two years. Masterfoods undertook considerable development work before receiving the funding.; Running costs - £100 000 plus; Total -
