    This project aims to prevent coronary heart disease among deprived areas by increasing participation in outdoor sports and awareness of healthy issues.

    What local organisations are involved?

    The Cottoning On initiative, Oldham Community Sports Centre.

    There is one project leader as well as volunteers in each sport.

    We are targeting young people and deprived areas that are high in coronary heart disease. We are also trying to address cultural and mental health issues.

    About 200 people

    What interventions are you using to address the problem?

    The project creates parks and open spaces. For example, the Thin Trails allows people to use sports equipment outdoors. This initiative supports activities such as mountaineering and canoeing. Activity based clubs have also been developed.

    The evaluation is mostly numbers orientated.

    What obstacles did you have to overcome to set up this project?

    We haven’t had too many obstacles so far. We have experienced lots of support from the Oldham Primary Care Trust and community centres and groups.

    What have you learned about the project so far?

    We have received lots of good advice from lots of people.

    What would you do differently?

    We would make sure it was a little longer to base the foundation.
