Healthy Living Resource Centre

Description The Centre will open in October 2007. It will bring about step changes in local health inequalities by tackling particular health issues like smoking, obesity, poor housing, mental health and community regeneration by changing how services are delivered locally, reducing barriers and improving health choices.
Setting Easington Colliery and its surrounding areas. Easington Colliery is the most deprived area in England as defined by the English Indices of Deprivation (2004).
Populationting All residents living in Easington Colliery and its surrounding areas.
Intervention summary A number of core services will be delivered through the centre such as podiatry service, cardiovascular suite and a children’s gym. Sessional activities will include smoking cessation, weight management, healthy eating and community safety.
Outcome Summary None yet. A number of outcomes will be measured such as life expectancy, smoking cessation rates and obesity levels.

    How many people are running this project and who are they?

    County Durham PCT runs the project. There is one centre coordinator, Fiona Gillespie.

    What local population are you targeting?

    County Durham Primary Care Trust (PCT); Horden and Easington Colliery Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder; District of Easington Neighbourhood Renewal Unit; East Durham Local Strategic Partnership; and Northumbrian Water.

    How many people are you targeting?

    The target for the project is initially all residents living in Easington Colliery and its surrounding areas but the Healthy Living Resource Centre will be open to anyone who lives within the district. The target audience is approximately 28 000 although the district’s population is 93 300.

    Interventions

    What interventions are you using to address the problem?

    A number of core services will be delivered through the centre such as a podiatry service, cardiovascular suite and a children’s gym. Sessional activities will include smoking cessation, weight management, healthy eating and community safety.

    A number of awareness raising consultation events have been planned to determine service activity within the centre and to find out the views of the community.

    Funding and developing a coherent service plan that marries together health improvement and the social regeneration agenda of the Horden and Easington Colliery Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder.
